Mapnik is one of the main tools used in GIS in both server side and client side (thanks to the different bindings). Currently the version included in the repository is the 0.6.1, but 0.7.0 is out for some time and it would be great to have it included in lucid due the LTS aspect of that release.
We can also rely on a very present, and active upstream that is following bugs directly in launchpad and I have very good intreactions with them.
The 0.7.0 fixes a lot of bugs that are present in the 0.6.1, as stated in the diff of the Upstream's Changelog. |

Mapnik 0.7.0 is now in debian testing, and it includes most of the ubuntu specific changes so a merge to debian testing would be a wise choice. |
