Bug Description

According to the package's README.Debian: "I had to disable SSL because of a license issue.
Hopefully, this will be solve soon."

What licence issue exactly?
Please either include SSL/TLS support or provide more information about this "licence issue".
Even better: provide another mail-notification package with SSL in "restricted".

The reason for this would be you can't use openssl with GPL programs.

mail-notification only links against OpenSSL, which is already included with Ubuntu. The OpenSSL FAQ (linked in the previous comment) expressly says that it should be OK to link GPL applications to OpenSSL if it is included in the distribution:

"2. Can I use OpenSSL with GPL software?

On many systems including the major Linux and BSD distributions, yes (the GPL does not place restrictions on using libraries that are part of the normal operating system distribution)."

Not to be a pain about this, but it looks like Debian legal are the only folks who think this is a license violation. If I'm missing something here then I appologize, but this license "issue" does render several packages crippled or useless. I recompie with SSL support myself, but as a "user-friendly" distribution that's too much to ask really - and the lack of SSL support in mail-notification is actually a security problem for users who don't understand what that means.

This still applies to Feisty. And it's a PITA, IMHO. I'm really angry about this bug being rejected.

Evolution seems to use libgnutls for TLS and SSL. Maybe mail-notification should be changed to use this lib instead of openssl.

And maybe I'll try to port this (though I'm not a good C-coder) ... if I have the time to ( haha... ) :-)
