Lyx chokes on all bibtex bibliography insertions

I found after inserting a bibliography file into an IEEE template, that my document was unable to export to PDF any longer.

I discovered that the same error existed regardless of the actual bibliography entry. My edits have all been done through the LyX menus, and in particular the edit which breaks the document export is inserted through Insert=>List/Doc=>BibTex Bibliography

I have tried removing each entry from my bibliography file in turn to see what the problem was. I ended up with an empty bibliography file. I tried using the 'test' bibliography file provided with LyX. They all lead to the same error.

TeX reports...

LaTeX Error: Something's wrong--perhaps a missing \item.
LaTeX Error: Something's wrong--perhaps a missing \item.
TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [main memory size=1500000].

...against apparently this line according to the two error reports...

 \begin{thebibliography}{}

Try typing <return> to proceed.
If that doesn't work, type X <return> to quit.

 \begin{thebibliography}{}

If you really absolutely need more capacity,
you can ask a wizard to enlarge me.

This error can be recreated from the pristine, blank IEEE template from...

Any insertion of a bibliography into the system causes TeX export to fail with this truly unhelpful warning.

Sorry to let you down, Jean-Marc. I stopped using LyX a long time ago, and sadly, for this file alone out of many years of development and reporting work, I have no backup copy. It went missing when I changed jobs and swapped laptops.
