Bug Description

This has been started since Lubuntu 11.10 and it is still happening on Lubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 on both the 32-bit version and the 64-bit version on two different machines (one laptop and one PC).

How to produce that? keep opening the menu then open a sub-menu (one of the categories - say Accessories) and then click on the desktop. The menu will NOT disappear UNLESS you go back and click again on the menu.

This is really annoying and I hope it's not too late to fix this before the final release of Lubuntu 12.04 :)

I will include a screenshot if that is necessary:

Karl, if you read the first post again, you will come to know that this issue is not 12.04 specific, it's been started since 11.10 :(

I don't think PCManFM has anything to do with this. It happened after I just did a fresh new installation. YES, it was my first move to check the menu to make sure that issue has gone and it happened that it is NOT gone yet and still happen.

Let's wait for Julien to confirm this :)

well how long does it take to reproduce this bug?
is it 100%

are you sure it's not a broken mouse?

amjjawad  (amjjawad) wrote :

Of course I'm sure because it happens on 3 different machines and I would have known if it is a broken mouse ;)

To produce it, try to:
1- Open the Menu
2- Go to any Sub-Menu (Category) - say Accessories
3- Start LXTerminal
OR
4- Right Click on LXTerminal
5- Add to Desktop
6- Menu Frozen

As I'm writing this, I have re-produce it 4 consecutive time ;)

Here is another Screenshot if you still don't believe me: http://i42.tinypic.com/5vszyw.jpg

On the above Screenshot, I went to Menu > Internet > Chromium > Add to Desktop > FROZEN - Menu got stuck

Again, I did that with 4 different categories and I got the same result 4 times consecutively.

This is Lenovo Laptop - Core i5 2nd Generation - 4GB RAM and using the touchpad + USB Mouse - Linux 3.0.0-17-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 20:45:39 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

YES, I can do the same with Lubuntu 12.04.

As I explained on my first post, this issue has started with 11.10 but if truth to be told, I did not file a bug last time and I hope it's not too late now.

@yorvyk

It happened 4 times consecutively with 4 different items like Chromium from Internet Category (sub-menu) and Shotwell from Graphics Category (sub-menu) and VLC from Sound and Video Category (sub-menu) and can't remember what else.

It looks like for the first time that "add to desktop" is the trigger but the REAL trigger is Right Click itself :)

I just managed to produce that (did not notice it last night) ... when you open the menu, then a sub menu then choose any entry and right click on that entry/item (say Synaptic from System Tools), just do NOT select Add to Desktop or anything thing, just a right click then remove your mouse and point at something else and make a left click ... there you go ... menu frozen or stuck.

YES, 100% can happen with Right Click and Add to Desktop with ANY item on the menu but not sure how re-producible is it with just the right click?

Hope that will help :)

I can confirm that. I have noticed this before but, just clicked on the menu button to clear it.

I wonder if we could claim it's a feature :P

Well, the same with 12.10, obviously since no fix for this bug as of now.

I found out that you don't don't really need to click "Add to Desktop", just Right Click on any Sub-Menu Entry will be enough to produce that.

And NO, Cairo-Dock and Compiz have nothing to do with that. I have tested it that before installing them already ;)

Same goes for Lubuntu 13.04 - same problem, nothing has changed except the shape of the icons, that is all :)

I have made a video to make it easier for our developers to see what is going on and I have explained everything in details on the description of that video. Please, see this: http://youtu.be/OAPbQHU31sI

Thank you!

P.S.
I really do hope this could be fixed once and for all on 13.10 because it does NOT make any sense :)

P.S. 2

I will list the details here JUST IN CASE you have a problem with YouTube site :)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: the problem has started since Lubuntu 11.10 until now and this is Lubutnu 13.04 on this video!

I have reported this as a bug long time ago - Bug 970758

Like any Menu on any system in the world, once you move your mouse away, the menu 'should' disappear. However, the Menu with Lubuntu has decided to go another path.

How to produce it?

Scenario A

1- Open Menu
2- Go to any category
3- Move your mouse away
4- Menu will NOT disappear UNLESS you click on anything else (does not matter right or left click)

Scenario B

1- Open Menu
2- Go to any category
3- Right Click on anything, say: Menu - Accessories - LXTerminal
4- Move your mouse away
5- Click on anything (right or left click does not matter)
6- Menu will never disappear and will be frozen and stuck on the same selection you have made - if you did Menu - Accessories - LXTerminal then it will indeed be stuck on that just like you are still using your mouse to make a selection while truth is, your mouse is somewhere else.
7- The only way to make it disappear and be back to normal is to click on the Menu Icon where the Lubuntu Logo so that it will disappear. Otherwise, it will not.

Ahh, now I understand. This is not a bug, it is a feature. If the menus were to collapse each time you moved your cursor from them, there would be a problem. I've been on sites when this occurs and it is extremely frustrating!

In fact amjjawad describes two differents behavior (scenario A and scenario B).

For me, scenario A is a wanted behavior : I agree with Phill that it would be very frustating if menu disappeared as soon as the mouse is away of it.

However, scenario B is not a normal behavior : I see no reason nor advantage for the menu to stay opened after a right click on an item, while we click away of this menu. The scenario B is indeed a bug (and an old one).

@Pierre Gobin (pierre-gobin)

I am definitely talking about Scenario B, that is exactly why I reported this bug on the first place and it is NOT an opinion, it is a bug :)

Thanks!

P.S.
I am not sure why this is hard to understand? this video is very clear: http://youtu.be/OAPbQHU31sI

and, any menu on any system must disappear and fade away the moment you finish your work on that menu. I fail to find a good reason why a Menu should be stuck on the desktop and refuse to disappear? this is a huge pain in the next and unwanted behaviour IMHO :)

http://youtu.be/OAPbQHU31sI

Scenario A is from the beginning to second 13

1- You click on your Menu
2- You hover your mouse over any area
3- Whether you click on something or not, the moment you hover your mouse away, the menu will disappear

THIS IS the default behaviour on ANY menu on ANY System :) and this is totally acceptable

Scenario B is from Second 14 to the end of the youtube video

1- You click on your menu
2- You hover your mouse over any area on the menu
3- The moment you do a Right Click and - for example - add to Desktop, the menu will be frozen
4- Whether you hover your mouse away ... whether you click on the desktop so many times ... that will never change the fact that the menu is frozen
5- The ONLY way to break that freeze is to go back to the Menu Icon and Click it

I am sure the video is super clear and I do hope this is the very last time I really have to explain this :D

Thanks :)

summary: - Menu is frozen after opening it and it will not disappear (even after
- clicking on the desktop) unless clicking on it again
+ Right Click on the Menu will make it frozen and will never disappear
+ unless you click back on the Menu's icon

Hi,

I confirm this. Any time the menu is opened, with just a regular click on the button to get the main menu it needs to be again clicked to have it closed. Having it fixed would be nice.

I also confirm it.
The menu usually disappears when one clicks away from it, but this doesn't happen if we right-clicked something on the menu, triggering the (ADD TO DESKTOP - PROPERTIES) form.

When we trigger the said form, the focus of the system in turned to it, forgetting the Menu.. so when we finish with the form the menu forgets to excute the usual command of (if user clicks away from the Menu, close it).

I hope this helps solving the problem.
