systray in lxpanel does not correctly handle vertical panels

Bug Description
I use lxubuntu on a Lenovo S10 netbook.
Because of the small screen, it is important to save vertical screenestate. Thus, it is natural to put panels on the side screen edges instead of top or bottom.
However, lxpanel does not handle this well. The systray shows a lot of empty space as seen in the left side of this screenshot:
