indicator applet shows icons horizontally when panel is in vertical mode

Indicator applets do not show icons when panel is in the vertical mode.

The problem is in fact not that the applet doesn't show icons, but that it shows them next to each other horizontally even when the panel is a vertical one, where the icons naturally should be displayed above each other. Ubuntu 13.04 (raring) reached end-of-life on January 27, 2014.
