package lxdm 0.4.1-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

April 25, 2012. Just upgraded to precise pangolin this morning from lucid. The upgrade took 2 or 3 hours and from time to time I did AM chores around my house. The last time I checked on the upgrade I found a dialog box. In the message area there were rows of little boxes, also boxes in the choice boxes. Unsure of what to do, I left the dialog box alone. The upgrade continued to completion. Rebooted.

I can open Ubuntu, LXDM. Gnome starts but does not display controls. Screenlets will load the weather app and the yellow stickies app OK. I do get get an error message suggesting I report it. I haven't messed with any of the other desktops yet.
