Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 dev with shared-mime-info 1.1-0ubuntu4. For a few days after upgrading the system I have noticed that python-files aren't shown as executable files anymore. I have already opened a bug report on upstream for this: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68494
But I'm not sure if this is really a bug in shared-mime-info because after downgrading shared-mime-info, PCManFM and libfm to the versions from Ubuntu 13.04 (libfm-data, libfm-gtk-bin, libfm-gtk-data, libfm-gtk3, libfm3, pcmanfm, shared-mime-info) and rebooting the system the problem still exists.

13.10 is EOL. please test with a current version. you can see
supported releases, end of life dates, etc. here:

based on what you have shown, it's unclear what the issue is:
1. are the files executable in the terminal? if so, you should check the executable flags. this may be obvious, but it's worth looking into.
2. are they only files that use #!/usr/bin/python? what about python3? what about #!/usr/bin/env python? for that matter, where does /usr/bin/python point to? it is a symbolic link after all.
3. is it only a problem being able to double click them in the GUI? if so, try running pcmanfm in the terminal and double clicking on the icon. what output do you get in the terminal?

furthermore, what are the versions of everything are we talking about? what 14.10 image? a release or a daily image? which one? what is the last version you can say this was working with?

I think this needs more clarification after this long time. The files affected by this bug have there gear icon on the file missing (that I was refering to in the startpost as executable files which wasn't accurate). They look then just like simple text files.

At least Python 2, Python 3 and C files are currently affected by this bug (but PCManFM is correctly detecting the file types and I got the hint in the PCManFM tracker that this bug is probably related to an icon-theme). But I remember to have encountered more file types in the past.

An upgraded Ubuntu 14.10 dev from an older Ubuntu version (the bug appears on 2 such machines). The package versions are:

sworddragon@ubuntu:~$ installed-packages -o name -s all | awk '{print $5,$6}' | grep -E 'icon-theme|libfm|pcmanfm|shared-mime-info'
gnome-icon-theme-full (3.12.0-1ubuntu1)
gnome-icon-theme-symbolic (3.12.0-1)
gnome-icon-theme (3.12.0-1ubuntu1)
hicolor-icon-theme (0.13-1)
libfm-data (1.2.2.1-1ubuntu1)
libfm-gtk-data (1.2.2.1-1ubuntu1)
libfm-gtk4 (1.2.2.1-1ubuntu1)
libfm4 (1.2.2.1-1ubuntu1)
lxde-icon-theme (0.5.1-1)
pcmanfm (1.2.2-1)
shared-mime-info (1.2-0ubuntu3)

if you double click on the file, does it open like normal?

are there ANY executable files that show the icon?

where's the upstream link to this hint you got?

what version of 14.10? is it an alpha? beta? daily image?

what versions did this last work with?

At least as I expect it.

> are there ANY executable files that show the icon?

There are files with and without the execution flag that have this icon.

As I said it's an older version of Ubuntu which was just upgraded. The last "apt-get update" and "apt-get dist-upgrade" was done yesterday.

I don't remember anymore but mostly I'm reporting a bug shortly after I have encountered it.

Also can you state what icon theme you are using. To find this out go to the menu select prefrences and customize look and feel. If it says lubuntu which is the default icon theme for lubuntu then lxde icon theme is not the the right package.

If it says nuovext2.0 then lxde-icon-theme will be the correct pacakge. I just installed lxde-icon-theme which is an updated version of nuovext2.0 and it does look like python files.

In the window that shows your icon theme if you change it does this problem go away. For me in utopic and the default lubuntu icon theme it changes to a python logo.

I'm not having such an entry because this is a minimalistic installation. Only the icon-themes from comment #5 are installed and nothing else related to icon-themes was changed.
