Bug Description
Binary package hint: lxde-common
How to replicate the problem:
install ubuntu-server
then I tried to add a simple X Desktop.
have done a "apt-get install lxde"
it installed some components, but after reboot I was unable to login via X ( the current situation)
I then recognised that "lubuntu-desktop" is the meta package for LXDE . I installed
that , too - but there is no changes.
I see the Login Screen, see the user which is confgured and but the sandglass is seen all the time

Yes, I confirm this, but this bug is due to gdm, I thought. The possible workaround that works for me is the following:
1) remove gdm
2) install slim (from Lucid)
And for me everything is working now. Hope, for you too.
Good luck.
