Bug Description

Version: Lubuntu 18.04
What happen: On launching desktop there are two network tray icons depending on how fast you started it.
What is expected: To have only one network tray icon whatever the way the desktop is started.

Description:
The miniapplication indicator's preference have two options: sound menu and application's indicator, the last show the network icon, as well as other indicators (I use Clipit and Multiload), so if unchecked it will hide those as well besides the network one.

There is another tray panel for notification area, bringing energy icon, and network again. This panel has no preference, so, if disabled will hide both icons.

I noticed that depending on how fast you boot your desktop, or if you installed with the option not to ask the password on login enabled, it may, sometimes, appear to be correct, with one single network icon.

If nm-applet is killed and then relaunched it seems to fix the problem, but it's a workaround, it should not be the default behaviour.

The real solution: remove the indicataor applet from the panel.

Given that we autostart nm-applet and that it exposes functionality not provided by the indicator-applets plugin. The plugin does not allow one to turn off which indicators one wants. It's either toggling sound or toggling all other indicators. That said, we should remove the indicator-applets plugin, which is ultimately just problematic, not just with networking but with sound, keyboard, etc.

This also occurs on xubuntu 18.04 and badly breaks the user experience an other solid ubuntu system. There is a related bug raised here, its high time this should be fixed now:

For what it's worth, the MATE and Xubuntu bugs are not entirely related. They do indeed have the same exact problems (the indicator applet duplicating things) but since we're dealing with three independent panels, each with their own implementations of the applets, they are not at all related. Put another way: if we fix this in Lubuntu, it won't fit anything for Xubuntu or MATE and vice versa.

I can confirm that this is still an issue. I tested on an Acer5740 laptop. The issue can be noted from the attached screenshot.

Walter, on ~/.config/lxpanel/Lubuntu/panels/panel, the plugin type indicator has two preferences, sound and apps, when sound enabled only sound icon is shown, when apps enabled the network icon and other apps (like cliptit, multiload, etc) is shown; on other hand the plugin type tray shows the battery icon and network icon.

There is no real solution, if tray is removed battery icon is lost, if indicator is removed sound icon and other apps is lost, only if you disable other apps on indicator preferences in order to show only the sound icon, but you would lose the feature to add apps like clipit and multiload.
