Bug Description

Hi,

not a real bug, just ugly:

lightdm-gtk-greeter shows a user icon at the login screen near to the name selection, and a default person-logo if none is set for the user.

That default logo is low-resolution, very pixelated, and thus really ugly.

This has nothing to do with the greeter but with the icon theme you're using.

Well, adding a different distribution resulted in:

Oops!
Sorry, something just went wrong in Launchpad.
We’ve recorded what happened, and we’ll fix it as soon as possible. Apologies for the inconvenience.

That's not helpful either.

Simon, please be so kind and add the correct package or distro so the problem can be fixed. We saw the problem in Lubuntu 18.04 LTS, with the DEFAULT user icon on the initial login screen. It is of poor quality indeed; thus the default user icon should be replaced and a package update and respun ISOs provided when possible.

Hadmut, would you please execute:
sudo dpkg-query -S <filename>
to determine the exact package name where the image file resides? Thanks!

Actually I am not sure how lightdm chooses it's file.

/etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.d/30_lubuntu.conf contains

icon-theme-name=lubuntu

(note the lower case lubuntu).

I've done a
strace -s 80 -f -o lightdmtrace lightdm --test-mode --debug

to find that it reads
/usr/share/icons/Lubuntu/index.theme

(note the upper case Lubuntu) and from there gets to the icon
/usr/share/icons/Lubuntu/imported-Adwaita/24/avatar-default.png

which is 24x24 pixel and gets scaled up, thus ugly.

both files belong to the package lubuntu-icon-theme.

Since all this happens before logging in, my personal icon settings would have no effect. BTW, this is as it comes out of the box after installation.

regards

Thanks Hadmut! Since lubuntu-icon-theme is not listed on Lauchpad (PPAs not considered) I added lubuntu-artwork as an affected package.

You're right also; it comes out of the box after installation that way. I can confirm that. Therefore it should be fixed.

no longer affects: lightdm-gtk-greeter

Yes, the icon theme is a (global) lightdm-gtk-greeter setting. That's one of the reasons we ship lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings by default with Xubuntu.

Package lightdm-gtk-greeter-setting seemed not to be available from the selection menu though.

However, current sate is TRIAGED (wishlist) for package lubuntu-artwork (Ubuntu), which seems appropriate.
