Unreadable Window Titles & Indeterminate Checkboxes

The text of all window titles and some menu items is garbled and unreadable. Also, it is hard to tell if the checkboxes in dialog windows are checked or not. Attached is a screenshot of the Desktop Preferences window that illustrates these issues.

I'm running Lubuntu 14.0.4 on a 2001 iMacG3 (PowerMac4,2).
