No icon for USB drives on desktop or unity launcher

When a user plugs a USB drive into an LTSP client, no icon appears on the desktop or in the Unity launcher. The drive is shown in the sidebar of nautilus windows, but users do not know they have to look there. They expect an icon to appear. Most users give up immediately if nothing happens.
Having an icon appear will considerably improve usability in an everyday task.

This bug also affects my setup. Seems to be related to bug #977369, but the bug summitter in that bug is talking about Gnome Classic instead of Unity and about Ubuntu 12.04 instead of 11.10.

I confirm that this problem persists in 12.04's unity. It would be very helpful to have an icon appear in the launcher when a USB stick is attached.

As .cobnet says, this is probably a duplicate of bug #977369. The two bugs may have a common cause.
