Bug Description

The new Network Manager seems to detect manual changes to network cards and reset them (at least in alpha-1).

This is breaking LTSP live.

A workaround might be to add "eth0 manual" to /etc/network/interfaces. This way network manager shows the interface as "unmanaged" in the UI, and doesn't touch it.

Unrelated to live LTSP, the same "eth0 manual" approach should also work for LTSP clients. E.g. fat clients can then have network manager installed (now we blacklist it) and use it to create e.g. VPN or wifi connections, while their boot interface remains unmanaged.

Converting to a Feature Freeze exception as the new code will be a rewrite.
Planning to get it uploaded by Thursday.

Branch is currently at: https://code.launchpad.net/~edubuntu-dev/ltsp/ltsp-live

Change will only affect Edubuntu and both Jonathan and I are fine with it.

Given the scope of the new code will only affect Edubuntu, and both product managers for Edubuntu are ok with it, it should be ok. One request that if it isn't solid enough by beta freeze (8/25 2100 UTC), we hold off on it until after beta 1 freeze is over.

Merged into the ltsp source package, tested and uploaded.

The current code could do a bit more progress tracking and error handling but it's not a regression from the old implementation in that regard. I'll try to squeeze a new version by tomorrow that deals with crashes and tries to give some feedback to the user.
