Im having this exact problem on the Ubuntu 16.10 Server PowerPC installation image.

Nearly identical hardware as well.

platform : PowerMac
model : PowerMac7,3

Error output,
Setting up lasvpd (1.7.7-1ubuntu1) ...
vpdupdate is not supported on the Unknown platform
dpkg: error processing package lsvpd (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Seems that the package does not like being installed in a 32-bit userland on a 64-bit system. Started the powerpc-64 installer and it was not a problem.

It is happening on 64-bit too with 1.7.6-0ubuntu4.
