Bug Description

Binary package hint: llvm

the shark VM for OpenJDK requires at least on ARM llvm 2.7. lucid currently has a snapshot of llvm and clang taken from the trunk. unfortunately the 2.7 release was pushed back a few weeks. See

  http://lists.cs.uiuc.edu/pipermail/llvmdev/2010-February/029485.html

Still proposing to follow upstream up to the 2.7 release. while llvm is in main, the resulting binary packages are only found in universe.

In general, following svn snapshots until the final 2.7 release seems fine to me, and is common practice.

Are there any major structural changes between our snapshot and current svn head which affect the reverse dependencies, or require other library transitions, etc?

no, the only changing thing will be the libllvm2.7 shared library, which will require rebuilds for depending packages (openjdk-6)

Sounds ok then, please go ahead.

Nice to see LLVM 2.7 getting into the new Ubuntu LTS. However, please take note that LLVM 2.7 disabled RTTI by default to speed up compilation time during development and for reducing the binary size. However, it breaks linking the LLVM libs with applications that use RTTI features, such as our TCE toolset (http://tce.cs.tut.fi). So, please enable RTTI by default in this package by make REQUIRES_RTTI=1 to make it more usable for projects that use LLVM as a library.

The discussion about it in LLVMdev: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.compilers.llvm.devel/29564/focus=29578

20100418 snapshots are now in lucid; final release may have to wait until after the lucid release.
