Bug Description
Binary package hint: lirc-modules-source
I don't see the point why users should build the lirc modules manually by the lirc-modules-source package, so a package like 'lirc-modules' would be useful containing the binary modules for the current kernel.
New users unfamiliar with linux won't be able to use their remotes, because they don't want (and don't know how) to bulid things from source.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This has been proposed to the kernel team, and perhaps in future versions of Ubuntu, lirc will be included in the kernel rebuild process. For the time being, using "m-a" to rebuild the modules is needed:
sudo m-a -v -t prepare
sudo m-a -v -t build lirc-modules
sudo m-a -v -t install lirc-modules
