Howdy, and thank you for helping to improve lirc and Ubuntu by opening this ticket. The DpkgTerminalLog attached by turul69 has the following:

Setting up lirc (0.8.6-0ubuntu2) ...

reload: Unknown instance:

invoke-rc.d: initscript udev, action "reload" failed.

@turul69: did you resolve this issue, or is it still occuring?

Note to others: unfortunately the top-level error message (in this case "package lirc (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1") is a very generic message and the underlying reason for that message can be different. Before saying that this bug affects you too, please check your DpkgTerminalLog and if it doesn't have the above message referring to "initscript udev, action "reload" failed." towards the end, please open a new ticket.

I have got exactly the same error. I am upgrading a stock fit2pc from ubuntu 8.04 LTS directly to Lucid Lynx.

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of lirc-x:
 lirc-x depends on lirc (= 0.8.6-0ubuntu4.1); however:
Package lirc is not configured yet.
No apport report written because the error message indicates its a followup error from a previous failure.

 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

My first instinct is to remove lirc, but the upgrade is not urgent, so if somebody wishes to look closer at this I'd be happy to help.

Hi, can you please try again with the latest lirc from zesty (a.k.a. upcoming 17.04 version), and set the status back to "new" in case you still experience such issue?
You can also try it from my ppa, where I backported it to xenial and yakkety releases (16.04 and 16.10)
