I'm having this problem on Mythbuntu Karmic. I've troubleshooted it to a race condition. While /etc/init.d/lirc is starting the daemon, another process restarts (stops and starts) it. Sometimes it overlaps to cause a failure and sometimes it still works.

Why is the bug still "unassigned"?
