Bug Description

Binary package hint: lirc

Lirc doesn't have an option for this Cyberlink remote (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/6372024/Cyberlink-Remote-Control-+-USB-Receiver/Product.html) and I don't have the Knowledge to create a hardware.conf file for it so far the information i have is that:

1) It is made by the same company that make the old MCE remotes
2)support in windows is as good in Linux (rubbish...unless using a Cyberlink product)
3) some more information I could find on this remote which a appears to be made by a company called Jess-Link who then brand it for whoever (http://www.jpcco.com.tw/technology_info.aspx?productCategoryID=wireless&subCategoryID=2&productID=18)

If anyone can help with this then thanks! if you need more info I'm here (although I don't know if I can be of much use other than you giving me commands/tests to run on my PC with the thing connected...)

Thanks in advance!

PS: Almost forgot to mention that the four arrow keys and the ok button which they surround work out of the box with Ubuntu 8.10 and there is a picture of the remote below!

Hi Carl:

Unless you can post a lircd.conf for us to include, there is nothing we can do to fix this bug. We can't write the lircd.conf as that requires the hardware. If you can post a lircd.conf for it, please reopen the bug.

Details of an lircd.conf for this remote are given at http://cjo20.net/remote.htm. Using these instructions I was able to get all buttons working under Mythbuntu 8.04. Note: In both Mythbuntu 8.04 and 9.04 the numeric keys, ok, clear and enter etc work out of the box without configuring lirc as (I think) it appears as a USB keyboard. In 9.04 the power button in top right acts as a suspend button and will cause the pc to suspend if allowed.
Under Mythbuntu 9.04 using the same lircd.conf I can only get some of the buttons in the top half of the remote to work. There is a work around program provided at http://linux.thaj.net63.net/cyberlinkusb/. I haven't tried this yet.
Apparent this remote works ok under kernel 2.6.29 (http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=f14f526d02b14fd0b8c1ac4ec413e4577ad5f62e)

This remote is discussed at http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=39433.

Hopefully, this information will be useful as it would very useful to get this cheap remote working out of the box.

It might be useful to add the remote to the HAL ignore list. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lirc/+bug/204960.
This should enable lirc to have complete control over the whole remote. This would probably be better as it would be more flexible.
I haven't tried this yet.

Tried the program provided at http://linux.thaj.net63.net/. This appears to work.
I have also found the bug https://answers.launchpad.net/mythbuntu/+question/54983. Following the instructions provided by "Aaron Whitehouse said on 2009-05-03" I installed lineakd to get evtest ($ sudo apt-get install lineakd). Trying this on /dev/input/event6 gave:
sudo evtest /dev/input/event6
Input driver version is 1.0.0
Input device ID: bus 0x3 vendor 0x766 product 0x204 version 0x100
Input device name: "TopSeed Tech Corp. USB IR Combo Device "
Supported events:
  Event type 0 (Sync)
  Event type 1 (Key)
    Event code 113 (Mute)
    Event code 114 (VolumeDown)
    Event code 115 (VolumeUp)
    Event code 116 (Power)

    Event code 165 (PreviousSong)
    Event code 166 (StopCD)
    Event code 167 (Record)
    Event code 168 (Rewind)
    Event code 173 (Refresh)

    Event code 362 (Program)
    Event code 385 (Radio)
    Event code 402 (ChannelUp)
    Event code 403 (ChannelDown)

    Event code 1 (Y)
    Event code 8 (Wheel)
  Event type 4 (Misc)
    Event code 4 (ScanCode)

This suggests that by usinghttp://linux.bytesex.org/v4l2/linux-input-layer-lircd.conf it might work. I will test when possible.

I have one of these, but i don't use it. I have a complete remote conf file, but can only locate a partial one at present.

I have attached the partial one, can you let me know if it works?

That matches my conf which worked on Mythbuntu 8.04 (see also http://cjo20.net/remote.htm). I've attached my conf which covers all buttons. However, as mentioned earlier this only works for some buttons in Mythbuntu 9.04. If I remember correctly, these buttons include Back, Record, LiveTv?, Play, Pause, etc.

Work around:
Use program provided at http://linux.thaj.net63.net/. This has to be re-compiled for every set of keys and run as root after X has started. Using this I have got both MythTv and XBMC to work.

This is not really a bug but a configuration issue. Unless there is more input I suggest that this bug is closed. In order to advance it, more input is required
