package linux-tools-common (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/perf', which is also in package linux-base 3.4

I was trying to run 'perf', and got the message:
   /usr/bin/perf: line 24: exec: perf_3.2: not found
  E: linux-tools-3.2 is not installed

I tried to install linux-tools with:
  sudo apt-get install linux-tools

It fails with the error message:
  dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-tools-common_3.2.0-24.37_all.deb (--unpack):
    trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/perf', which is also in package linux-base 3.4

It looks like linux-base provides a wrapper, which is not overwritten by the real 'perf'
in linux-tools? I'm just guessing.
