Bug Description

I have been experiencing random system freezes since I switched to XUbuntu 12.04. Those were not happening when using Fedora 16 with XFCE.

My interface will become non-responsive. The mouse pointer will not move and no keyboard input will be received. And I can't use Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or 2 or...) to get a shell to try to fix the problem. The only solution is a hard restart.

It is happening both after a hibernation resume without hibernation.

I tried the DPMS settings as mentioned here, but it still froze.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze

As I didn't install SSHD before, I wasn't able to test if the problem was only with the X server or it is a kernel panic or something else.

I also had this happening with Unity, so the problem is not XFCE-specific.

This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

The latest precise kernel in the proposed repository has been rebased to upstream stable v3.2.14. Can you test either the proposed 12.04 kernel or mainline v3.2.14? This will eventually be fixed in 12.04 through the normal SRU process, when it 12.04 is rebased to 3.2.16, but it would be good to know if it is already fixed in 3.2.14.

3.2.14 can be downloaded from:

Don't know about anyone else, but I have been trying kernel 3.4 for the past few days, and the problem persists. It doesn't seem as frequent (once a day or two compared to several times a day) but as it was always quite random it is hard to tell if that is just incidental or because of the newer kernel.

BearT (beart) wrote :

I've tried the 3.4 kernel too and also had problems. The computer did not (fully) wake up after standby but I could not find any signs of the "invalid framebuffer id" log entry. So I stopped testing 3.4 but considered it as working fine regarding this bug.

Pablo180 (paultait22) wrote :

That's exactly what I found BearT. It seems that the symptoms are the same but the error message is either different or has been removed in later kernel versions.

I also tried kernel 3.2.14 and had the same problem again, it wouldn't fully wake from suspend. The only error message I found was 'Composite sync not supported' like you I found no 'invalid framebuffer id' errors anywhere, yet the problem is identical.

I also have the same problem when I switch from using monitors to using the laptop screen, sometimes it works, other times it seems to get lost between the two and I have no screen on either and have to restart.

It really is driving me up the wall; since updating to 12.04 I have a very unreliable machine that randomly needs restarting and coupled with the regular compiz/unity crashes is making me despair of Ubuntu.

@37: Sorry Pablo, I can't reproduce your findings regarding the 3.2 kernel on my machine. Kernel 3.2.14-precise 64bit ran perfectly on my machine for the last two days. The computer woke up after standby multiple times without any recognizable problems.

@34: Kernel 3.2.14-precise 64bit worked for me.

Just had two days also without any problems - on kernel 3.2.16 - since Sunday (when it failed to resume twice on same kernel) so not sure whether this has been fixed or whether I've just been lucky.

Still can't switch between monitors and laptop screen however, same problem, the only apparent error message is 'composite sync not supported' there too.

Pablo180 (paultait22) wrote :

I can confirm that this problem persists (at least for me) on kernel 3.2.14 (apologies I put 3.2.16 above but I meant 3.2.14). After nearly 5 full days without any problems it has just failed to resume errors as below:

[15253.985618] Restarting tasks ... done.
[15254.108071] video LNXVIDEO:00: Restoring backlight state
[15254.110178] [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id
[15254.124215] composite sync not supported

Then I just get lots of composite syncs not supported.

It definitely doesn't seem to happen as often as before, I almost thought it was fixed. I don't know whether it has any bearing, but it seems to happen more often when I have things plugged into the USB port. A mouse in this case.

Pablo180 (paultait22) wrote :

I don't know whether this is of use to anyone (I am just an end user rather than a technical person) but after several weeks of testing this bug, I can confirm that this is power related.

If I have my laptop plugged in when I resume, I NEVER get this error message at all. Indeed the only way that I have discovered to avoid this error is to open the lid, with the laptop still plugged in. If my laptop isn't plugged in, I have approximately a 1 in 3 chance of getting the Invalid Frame Buffer ID error message. Rendering this device virtually useless as a laptop, as I now have to shut down and restart when away from a power point.

Just to re-iterate, this problem has only occurred with 12.04 when restoring from resume (sleep, standby, suspend or whatever it is called) and is still present on kernel 3.2.14-030214-generic-pae.

Marc-André Laverdière, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . Please note that one will need to install Ubuntu to test hibernate, as at this time, hibernate does not work in a live environment. If the issue remains, could you please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p %s %d

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested and remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER', where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER', where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

My Lucid occasionally doesn't wake up fully - no display activity. At first I had to reboot the computer until I guessed to connect via ssh to it. I checked all logs, e.g. in /var/log, and the only sign I found out about the issue is

in dmesg' output, so I am here. :(

Fortunately, gdm restarting wakes up my display finally, so I got the workaround.
But I still want to fix the issue the right way.

From http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1444822 I found people that have the same issues with suspend, their workaround is to unload USB drivers before suspend/hibernate (and load again after wake up). It is a hack but it seems to work.

Here it is my dmesg output:

Over and over again surrounded by:

composite sync not supported.

With an occasional:

[drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id

I'd never thought that it may be related. I'll have to see if there is a way of disabling the card reader, as I seldom use it and test Suspend again.

Hibernate works fine for me, and recently has become quite fast, so that is what I have been using and I don't have the same problem, the only problem I have is resuming from Suspend.

I heard that such issues with Lucid default kernel, but upgrading to linux 3.0 kernel didn't resolve the issue. :(

So what? Today my comp didn't woke fully again and I habitually tried to ssh to it from my notebook ... but failed because cannot "ping" it (no ip address). The last way was to check ethernet connection to the router, I switched the cable in and out ... voala, the computer woke at once, without any ssh kicking... So one may think that it was that full freeze again I have written above. :/

Christopher, I appreciate what you are saying, but I don't see the need for a new bug report, indeed I feel that filing a new bug report will make this problem even less likely to be fixed (than it already is) as it will spread out the problem, i.e. make the same/related issues appear as two or more separate ones.

Like the original filer of the bug, I too have had problems with resuming from hibernation (although this now appears to be fixed - touch wood), sleep and also switching from external monitors to the laptop screen. The only common denominator that I can find is the error: [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id

Which is present in all cases. The reason that I have mentioned the power possibly being related, and also the SD card reader is because I am basically clutching at straws and hoping the information may be of use to whomever takes this bug on.

I've just had the problem again, this time after leaving my computer for an extended period of time, the monitors turned off but wouldn't come back on and the computer was unresponsive. This is the first time that it has happened this way. I eventually managed to get the system to respond again by disconnecting all leads and then plugging the power cable in (it had been on battery power) and reinserting all the leads again (the machine in question is a laptop that I frequently use as a desktop PC).

dmesg gave the following:

composite sync not supported
