Bug Description

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop, and my mic input doesn't pick up any sound. Sound Recorder (v 2.18) doesn't record anything, and Skype's "test call" feature doesn't pick up my voice. I know my hardware works because everything is fine under Windows. I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 7.04 beta and the problem does not seem to have been fixed. Please contact me if you need any additional information: <email address hidden>

Thanks
- Ian

steky45 (skyriacou) wrote : Solution to: Re: Microphone input doesn't work

I had the same problem yesterday ie no microphone input working on my IBM lenovo t43 - i searched google - this is the solution i found - BUT THIS SHOULD WORK OUT OF THE BOX - users should not need to do all this config - here are my notes - my thanks to the person that actually gave the solution (i lost the reference though)

I run gnome-volume-control that shows the microphone and clicked on Edit/Preferences and i clicked on 1. microphone 2. microphone capture 3. capture 4. mic select AND
THEN CLICK OK - AND THEN click on :
  - Recording TAB: make sure that the microphone icon does NOT HAVE AN X OVER IT
  - Options TAB: select MIC 1

(Please look around in this application if you still have problems - there may be other issues that may be biting you)

Microphone works fine now.

Note that all this data is saved under your personal directory ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-volume-control/

It unfortunately appears that this bug is not yet resolved. Could someone please confirm whether steky45's recipe works?

We would like to know whether this issue still exists in the Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS release. And if so, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is also scheduled for release today. It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if someone could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in advance.

I installed alpha3 on an AMD x64 machine.

I selected all available channels, and made sure all volume levels were maximum and that nothing was muted.
I tested the front mic with gnome sound recorder and was able to hear a playback of my recording.

This is very promising. However, I had originally reported this issue on a Intel x64 machine, so I would like to reserve final judgment until I am able to test the mic on that machine. I will also play around with the volume settings on various channels since the playback was fuzzy, possibly caused by maximizing all channel volumes.

One other note, when I select the input source as "mic," but my microphone is *actually* connected to the "*front* mic" input (not "mic"), I can still faintly hear my recording during playback-- I don't know if t his is a software issue, or a hardware issue.

Thank you for testing with alpha3. Please be sure to file separate bugs for things you find that do not match this bug's description. That way you increase the probability for this bug to get fixed, as well as for the other bugs you file.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
