Went through the whole upgrade until the restart where it only showed the old headers and returned to the old system ie 11.10

You may need to run the following:

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then re-install the package.

I have noticed that my log on screen says 12.04LTS but this does not show when selecting to run Linux or windows, it still shows 11.04
