Bug Description

Ubuntu crashes when I try to use ASUS Zenbook UX31E HDMI out (with Asus VS239H). It works nicely with console and LightDM login screen, but when I log in to Ubuntu/Ubuntu2D, screens (external and internal) go blank.
Restarting LightDM usually works (works as in "you'll see the LightDM login screen again), but sometimes this hangs the whole system.

Things you need to know:

1) lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Release: 12.04

2) apt-cache policy linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic
linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic:
  Installed: 3.2.0-24.37
  Candidate: 3.2.0-24.37
  Version table:
 *** 3.2.0-24.37 0

        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-proposed/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) I expect that X doesn't crash and I see output on both (or at least one) displays.

4) X crashes, both screens turn black. Sometimes external monitor turns red. Console usually works after the problem. LightDM has to be restarted.

WORKAROUND:
echo SATA_ALPM_ENABLE=true | sudo tee /etc/pm/config.d/sata_alpm

Tested with the latest upstream kernel, and the problem exists, (though I was able to get it once working after several LightDM restarts and HDMI cable attachs and disconnects).

Kernel's drm:intel errors have gone though.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

Hi,

I'm unable to run 'apport-collect 989226' ("No packages found matching linux", "ERROR: hook /usr/share/apport/general-hooks/ubuntu.py crashed", plus the traceback calls...)

These are the errors I get when I unplug external HDMI display and plug it in again (X crashes):
[ 36.385154] [drm:intel_dp_complete_link_train] *ERROR* failed to train DP, aborting
[ 39.938299] [drm:drm_crtc_helper_set_config] *ERROR* failed to set mode on [CRTC:4]

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

Okay, I tested the problem more. With upstream kernel, I can get the picture to external display with HDMI if I boot the computer display connected. But this way I can't get picture to internal display, even though Ubuntu display manager recognizes internal display and extends the screen to both of displays (disabling and enabling display doesn't help). If I plug the display after login, it works quite well (still some glitches though, usually I have to disconnect and connect it again to get the output working).

I can't get the external display with HDMI working at all using Precise's kernel linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic. I tried with display connected when booting up the computer or connecting the display when in LightDM login screen, and it will display output on external until I log in to X. I've also tried to connect the display after login, but then both screen go blank. Console and LightDM login screen are displayed nicely on the external and internal display.

If needed, I can try to explain the problem more presice and/or test with some other settings...

I found a fix for problem. When enabling sata alpm, the external display with HDMI works. If you want to get also internal display working, connect external display after you have logged in to X. This fix works for precise's and upstream's kernel.

Fix: "echo SATA_ALPM_ENABLE=true | sudo tee /etc/pm/config.d/sata_alpm"

Okay, I don't know in which kernel the bug exists or how to reproduce or fix it, but I know it's there. Sometimes switching between kernels from boot to boot enables external display to work with X (display cable connected all the time). Sometimes it needs several boots and kernel switches before it starts to work. And sometimes I have to change the state of the SATA ALPM to get it to work. But most of the time the display doesn't work, and I think the problem is connected to this error msg: "[drm:intel_dp_complete_link_train] *ERROR* failed to train DP, aborting". Maybe this issue causes some corruption in GPU's memory...
Just in case I run memtest86 for main memory, and no errors found.

I've switched between precise's kernel linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic as also upstream kernel linux-image-3.4.0-030400rc4-generic. Sometimes external display works with both of the kernels and sometimes it doesn't work with either of them.

I'm out of ideas after tens of dozens reboots.
Can anyone confirm that HDMI out is (not) working out of the box?

Please, help. What can I do to fix that at least temporarily?

Thank you!

Oh I forgot:

If X crashes, please attach the log file containing the backtrace (usually /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old right after it crashes).

The output of "lspci -nn" would also be nice.

Testing the most recent versions of all the components (mainly Kernel) would be good too.

Thanx! Now problem is not so big, because after reinstallation of the system HDMI out works, but only if I connects to it after full X load. If HDMI cable connected during booting - my internal monitor didn't enables. So if I want to work with internal and external monitors at the same time I should disconnect HDMI cable before power on.

P.S. I don't know how to update Kernel and how to boot it with drm.debug=0xe

Janne Savikko, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 989226

Thank you for your understanding.

Janne Savikko, thank you for providing the requested information. As per http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/04/Product/optiplex-960 an update is available for your BIOS (A17). If you update to this, does it change anything?

If not, could you please provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Thank you for your understanding.

Thanks for your prompt advices, Christopher.

Sorry about the attachment spam. My attachments from Dell Optiplex 960 are not valid for this Zenbook issue so I hid them (though I updated Dell's BIOS as you suggested).
I tried to reproduce bug #989443 with Ubuntu 13.04 (and succeeded partly), and didn't understood that it would flood this issue. I'll direct my gathered information to the right bug.

This bug can be marked as expired again.
