Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of the introduction of a regression, and when this regression was introduced.

Also, I may be misinterpreting your description, but what I see is that your system is 99.2% idle, not loaded. Which tool have you used to check the CPU load?

Please ignore my last comment (#3). I read 100% instead of 1.00%.

I just noticed the same behaviour on my wife's laptop and mine. Both are running Precise x86_64 with the latest kernel (3.2.0-23-generic). Unfortunately, I haven't monitored the load average for ages so I can't say when the behaviour changed.

@Luis: not 100%, not even "1.00%" - as you wrote. Load average is a pure number not percent value as far as I know :) But it's "top" or "uptime" which can report three load average values, for different long time periods as far as I know.

Top reports almost 100% idle, though the load average is near to 1.00 which is odd, since if machine is almost idle, why load avg should be 1.00 or a value nearby? It should be near zero then, instead.

@Joseph + Cyril: Unfortunately I can't remember when it started to happen. What I am sure about: it's there with 3.2.0-23-generic-pae kernel. I haven't noticed it with earlier ones, -21- was before (I haven't ever used -22- , lack of reboot meanwhile). If it's important I can check the situation with older kernels, but I have no access to that computer till the next week (at my workplace).

One another thing: it seems it's not always 1.00, now I can see that load avg tops at 0.40 when being totally idle machine, etc. Again, this machine can be accessed now directly (only via ssh), and I don't want to reboot it remotely, but I can check it out later if this happened with older kernels too.

LGB [Gábor Lénárt], as per http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3773#bios an update is available for your BIOS (F10). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Thank you for your understanding.
