Bug Description

After latest updates to kernel 3.0.0-18, there seems to be no way to boot. Starting the computer results in an attempt to start grub, but grub hangs on a blue-ish, purple-ish background, the only way to boot is by resetting, and starting the computer while having the shift button pressed, then grub starts, and I can load in to the previous kernel.

Can you follow the "Boot options" instructions on the following wiki to enable additional output on boot:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot

As mentioned on the wiki, it would be great if you can attach a log file which may have captured any messages you see. If you are unable to capture a log file, a digital photo will work just as well. As a last resort you can even copy messages down by hand.

Could you please test the kernel at http://people.canonical.com/~henrix/lp973111/ ? We suspect you're hitting a bug that has been already fixed with the extra commit in this test kernel: c9651e70ad0aa499814817cbf3cc1d0b806ed3a1, "ASPM: Fix pcie devices with non-pcie children".

Upgrading to 3.0.0-19 did solve the problem for me though. I'm sorry, really had no time to test the kernal as asked yet. Would it still be necessary, since the -19 now is used?

bartje, it would be good to test the kernel in comment #3 only to sort out if this bug is the same as bug 961482, in this case this would be a duplicate and we could mark it as such.

rod_h, your bug must be a different problem since -19 fixed the problem for bartje, please open a new bug to avoid "polluting" this one.

Hi,

as asked I tryed to boot, according to the wiki. Since the system hangs completely, I could not create a log-file. I did take a picture with my camera though.
I hope this helps.

Grtz,
Bart

@bartje,

There is a new kernel in -proposed. If you just update your system you should get it. Please test that and if you have a problem,
open a new bug.

Thanks.

bartje, ok, the trace isn't complete on the picture, but likely should be the same as bug 961482, marking as duplicate.

I think comment #8 from Brad was intended to rod_h, rod_h please open a new bug.
