Hi Mike,
aufs has purposely been disabled in Precise 12.04 in favor of overlayfs. Anyone needing aufs is encouraged to migrate to overlayfs. We have yet to hear of any cases where overlayfs does not meet the needs previously satisfied by aufs. The latest overlayfs updates have also been integrated into the 12.04 kernel. Thanks.
