Bug Description

My system crashes regularly to a black screen with messages on it. Usually I have to switch off and re-boot. Occasionally, the crash just throws me back to the login screen. On these occasions the messages on the screen are in syslog. I have captured the syslog entries of the latest crash and attached them in a file 'Crash report'. The relevant messages in this file are at 23:15:12 but I have included some lines before and after this time.

As I said, crashes occur regularly. Every other day or so. They happened in 11.04 but have become more frequent in 11.10. A recent memory upgrade from 1GB to 2GB has not stopped them.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

If you want this bot to quit automatically requesting kernel tests, add a tag named: kernel-bot-stop-nagging.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

Crashes continue.

Here are a few examples:

Unable to handle kernel paging request at ea60eda8
Unable to handle kernel paging request at ea01bb4c
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000020

All the above required re-boot.

Unable to handle kernel paging request at 3f000044

Recovered by killing X so details attached from syslog.

I also had 4 crashes to text only screen in the first week after upgrading to 11.10. My machine is a Toshiba Satellite Pro A120, 1 Gig RAM. The machine was stable with 11.04. Downgrading the desktop to Unity 2D appears to have cured the problem.
Also Firefox crashed to desktop several times per day when using Unity 3D but this is also cured by downgrading to Unity 2D.

@Barry -- could you file an independant bug please with any information you have. Even a photo of the panic screen is helpful. This allows us to track independant hardware information against the bugs. Thanks!

Tony Pursell, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Christoper, I continue to get these crashes most days, sometimes two or three times a day, and nearly all of these types

Unable to handle kernel paging request at ...
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at ...

My current kernel (from apt-cache showpkg linux ) is

3.0.0.17.20 (/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_oneiric-proposed_main_binary-i386_Packages)

While preparing this reply (having gone to the terminal menu to select Copy), I had my latest crash, details were

Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)
EIP is at prio_tree_replace+0x19/0x60

I will get the latest Precise release onto a USB stick and give it a try, and I will upgrade pretty soon after its release in a months time and report back.

I will look into getting the latest upstream kernel, but that may be beyond my technical capabilities.

Hi Christopher

I am now updated to 12.04 (using kernel 3.2.0.24.26) and have experienced a week of operation without any crashes. So I think you can close this bug now.

If I get any more trouble like this, I will post a new bug report.

Tony
