Bug Description

I updated my system to Ubuntu 11.10 (oneiric). I have kernel 3.0.0-12.20.
The system won't start with this new version. I get always the same message (see below).
For the moment I am starting with Kernel 2.6.38-12.51

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-bolock (0,0)

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

problem solved:

I made some unrelated changes to menu.lst then did an update-grub.
To my surprise, in the diff it showed adding the line: "initrd /initrd.img-3.0.0-12-generic"
Apparently, during the upgrade from natty, the installer 'forgot' to add this very cruical line and i hadn't noticed.
all is good now (except that boot time takes an extra 90s bcuz its waiting for the network to come up, but it does that an all my kernels, so i'll have to file a sep bug for that).
