Bug Description

After upgrading to Kubuntu 11.10 from Kubuntu 11.04 on my Asus S96J laptop, the system will not power off when shutdown. It will halt the system but not power it down. I have to hold down the power button for the system to power down. When I initiated a shutdown via K Menu->Leave->Shutdown it should power down the system. Instead, it will halt the system but not power it down automatically.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

The latest kernel that I have installed is linux-image-3.0.0-13-generic, version 3.0.0-13.21 and the system will not power down.

Where can I find kernel-request-3.0.0-12.20?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . If possible, please test the latest kernel (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the others). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.1-rc9 fixed and issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.1-rc9'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Thanks in advance.

I'll install the kernel once I'm in front of my laptop. Many thanks for the clarification! :)

I installed mainline kernel linux-image-3.0.6-030006-generic_3.0.6-030006.201110050043_i386.deb (mapped from kernel 3.0.0-13.21) and it didn't fix the bug. The system won't power down.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

The bugzilla.kernel.org may still be unavailable due to the recent break-in. One alternative would be to report this directly to the subsystem maintainer or to the Linux Kernel Mailing List - <email address hidden>

I've narrowed down the problem a bit more, and I don't think it's a kernel bug but maybe something with KDE or X Windows...

The system will shutdown and then power off when I do the following:
Power on the laptop
CNTRL-ALT-F1 to bring up a console
Logged in normally
Issued the command - "sudo shutdown -h now"
It then shuts down and powers off the laptop
However, when I click on "K Menu -> Leave -> Shut Down" in KDE (this is Kubuntu 11.10), the system will halt, but not run the poweroff command.

I did a Google search and found the following:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1046871.html

I edit /etc/default/halt and add a line to remove the Intel sound module so it now looks like this:

# Default behaviour of shutdown -h / halt. Set to "halt" or "poweroff".
/sbin/rmmod snd_hda_intel
HALT=poweroff

However, the system won't power off when shut down from KDE.

I'm attaching my /var/log/syslog if that will help. I upgraded laptop-mode-tools to 1.58, which resolved the "Unhandled kernel version" error, but doesn't resolve the poweroff issue.

I can confirm, that poweroff from command line works, whereby a shutdown via KDE menu just performs a "halt".

Verified.

I started my laptop, selected Unity, and logged in. I used the Shutdown menu option in Unity and the laptop did power off.

It appears that this is a bug in KDE and not the kernel, so this bug report should be closed.

I have nearly the same problem as the original poster.
Ubuntu server, 64bit.
I just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 (Zotac ITX board) - and I did not change any settings in the process so it should work as before.
But.
The system will not power off when it's supposed to - which is scheduled to happen at 23:00 every day (via cron).
It will halt the system but it will not cut the power; I have to hold down the power button to cut the power.
The last two messages are:
* Will now halt...
[ 174.941747] System halted.
Thanks for fixing.

BTW, wake-on-lan won't work after this. I wonder if it's related.
Since physical access to the hardware is limited, I would appreciate a fast-track resolution on this.
Thank you.

You could try the workaround found in this article: http://linux.koolsolutions.com/2009/08/04/howto-fix-linux-hangfreeze-during-reboots-and-restarts/ "reboot=bios" fixed the shutdown and reboot hangs for me.

Run in terminal> sudo nano /etc/default/grub
Edit this line and save> GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="reboot=bios"
Run in terminal> sudo update-grub
Restart your PC
