Bug Description

upgrade enters this state, which does not work (ifconfig -a lists no interface):
foxyboy@s10t:~/Desktop$ lspci -k -nn -d 14e4:4727
07:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4727] (rev 01)
 Subsystem: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:0510]
 Kernel driver in use: bcma-pci-bridge
 Kernel modules: wl, bcma, brcmsmac

diagnose: open source driver bcma blocks proprietary driver brcmsmac from working. bcma does not work with Broadcom 4313

get-arounds:
sudo rmmod bcma
sudo rmmod brcmsmac
sudo modprobe brcmsmac
wi-fi now works.

or create a one-line file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-bcma
blacklist bcma

then reboot: wi-fi now works

before proceeding a little help needed to choose the upstream kernel that would help you guys the most vis-a-vis current install.

should I choose from ubuntu ppa mainline ? if so pls check my selection

current 3.0.0.12.20 --> 3.0.4 --> v3.0.4-oneiric/ of 30-Aug-2011 14:47

if correct then

sudo dpkg -i linux-image-3.0.4............amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.04..........amd64.deb

awaiting your reply.

From http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.1-rc10-oneiric/

Can you try the linux-image-3.1.0-030100rc10-generic_3.1.0-030100rc10.201110200610_i386.deb file?

You shouldn't need the headers.

@jsalisbury

well, a little story first -

- I disabled/removed the STA driver then
- over the weekend a belkin N300 usb wifi dongle plugged in and tried;
- I fiddled with dkms and tried to get the realtek module loaded; net results same as with the internal broadcom (the realtek module was created and installed with no errors); brief conn'n established , the dongle light was coming on - as with broadcom then out of the blue disconnected and dongle light disappeared.
- then in additional drivers the belkin/realtek driver removed too.
- used ndiswrapper and xp drivers; net result even worse than the first two - as soon as the command connect issued the desktop disappeared , dumped to a console with enable trace last line and a hard pc lock.

so I decided for a new oneiric install with the N300 usb wifi present. alernate CD install went ok. after first boot

Harald Rudell, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
