- but the computer is working I'm still able to ssh on it , so if you need additional logs/traces please let me know

Adding dmesg.log after recovering from Suspend/Hibernation.

I've noticed in the logs the followings:

Can you please confirm whether this issue occurs or not in a live session of the latest development version of Ubuntu?

It is available from http://www.ubuntu.com/testing.

Please note you will only be able to test suspend from a Live CD/USB session, hibernate won't work.

I've tried today the Live CD 11.10 AMD64 Desktop version but the display is not working, it boots from the CD, but the display remains black but there it has back lighting and the cpu fun is working.
I've tried to open a console but is not working .

I mean I'm not able to see the text logs as it boot so it looks like the Sony Vaio don't work at all with the latest Ubuntu development.

I've tried an upgrade also from 11.04 to 11.10 using "manager-upgrade -d" but it failed after downloading everything, with a message like "upgrade could not be completed"

So, can this be fixed ?

Not sure - you may have to wait until a developer with spare time available can take a look at the bug (I'm too busy at the moment).

Please can someone fix this, is the only reason I keep my laptop in Windows and not linux, because of this annoying bug.
And I'm sure other with this laptop have the same issue.

If needed I can supply more logs or anything .

There's nothing to stop you from learning a programming language and joining in development yourself if you wanted.

The majority of developers are currently overwhelmed with work because of how close it is to the release of Oneiric, and this issue seems to affect a relatively small number of people, so there are higher priority bugs to deal with.

I would suggest sending it upstream to the Linux Bugzilla, but the site is down at the moment TFN.

To start from where learning what ?

What's the point for asking for all those logs if no one bother to look over them.

Just big words for nothing ...

I have looked over the logs briefly, but there are no obvious causes I can see; also suspend and hibernate problems aren't really my area.

The logs can be useful for dealing with some bugs, but it is far easier to debug if you have the computer in front of you and can test the issue and fixes in a controlled environment.

Bear in mind that the vast majority of developers are volunteers with families and jobs - we don't get paid for this.

The Linux kernel is developed mostly in C, you can find the source code at https://github.com/torvalds/linux.

Hi Timothy sorry about yesterday post, I was kind of upset and yes I understand the volunteer job you're doing .

Regarding the fixing this myself , I'm not sure I know where to start from .

But I'm not sure if this is a hibernation/suspend issue ... maybe it is related to X server.
Because after resuming from suspend/hibernation the computer is working, I can ssh on it and issue commands.
The problem is that the X server is not working right after resuming from suspend/hibernation.

I will debug it myself but don't know where to start from.

Also in "Oneiric" it look like the X is not working at all on my laptop (which has an Intel video chip) it looks like they've broken it or something.

attaching more logs after suspend (managed to get them over ssh) maybe someone can get a hint of what's going wrong

I still can't see any obvious errors within those extra logs.

These articles may help in explaining suspend and resume debugging in Linux:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/SuspendResume
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UnderstandingSuspend
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume

I believe the problem is more likely to be with the graphics drivers than the X server - the fact you can SSH in to it suggests the problem is shallower though.

From experience these issues usually disappear after a few kernel releases when the upstream developers come across it themselves anyway.

Also, Oneiric beta 2 is out which uses a newer kernel, so you might want to try that if you haven't already.

Thanks for the links Timothy I will read them.

Hi, the X is not working in Beta 2.
I can start the X only using nomodeset , when booting from USB.
I've opened a bug for that : https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/860791

Dinu, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . However, note you can only test Suspend, not Hibernate, when using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
