Hi

Reinstalled everything and keep the original kernel 2.6.38-11 (x86 64). Enabled the pre-released updates + unsuported updates as well as applied the solution described by zzarko on his post at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1811178.

so far it has been working without freezing. I did that yesterday in the morning. It worked the complete day and today it is working for half day without freezing.

I'll keep you posted.

I can confirm this bug (it is obviously pretty annoying) and the workaround mentioned above does not work for me and should not be considered a permanent fix.

Chipset is the mentioned above (Atheros 9287), at least lspci tells me that, I am right now not able to confirm this (Card is a TP-Link TL-WN851N PCI).

System freezes appear as soon as I try to transfer a "a lot" of data (no measurements for specific limit where it breaks done yet, but considering it), e.g: a 720p youtube video will cause a freeze in less than 10 seconds, running transmission to download a dvd-image will show repeated loss of connection (while the connection itself seems up and running no data is transferred, reconnecting to the wlan fixes that temporarily) but eventually the system freezes in less than 5 minutes.
Freezes can sometimes occur even earlier (when connecting, reconnecting, logging in, etc).

It also happens with kernel 3.0, fedora 15, live-cd (kernel 2.6.38-8) (in fact i run ubuntu from the natty live-cd right now and connect it to the internet through my macbook), so I guess it is a bug in one of the modules related to ath9k or even ath9k itself and it affects all recent kernel versions. I am not willing to downgrade to a kernel version even older than the versions shipped with the natty live-cd.

It might help to know that i am connecting to a WPA2/Personal-protected network and the signal is on the weaker side. It seems to be more than enough on windows though (and the connection is by far more reliable).

It does NOT happen if: I remove the ath9k module, I run Windows, or wireless is disabled in the the menu/widget (and I connect to the internet through the wired connection).

I am trying to pin down what exactly happens within the module that causes the freezing, but there is no output on the serial console before/when it happens, besides the occasional "ath: Failed to stop TX DMA in 100 msec after killing last frame" (see bug #736171), and my keyboard lacks a SysRq-Key while I was not successful assigning another key to SysRq, and my PS/2 Keyboard won't work for whatever reason...

I will now append the information of the system I am running right now (natty live-cd), this should be sufficient as it happens with the live-cd as well, and I will try to upload it with the wireless connection enabled, so please be patient, my system may freeze several times before I can successfully upload all information.

It seems restricting the Router (AVM Fritz!Box Fon WLAN 7140 SL) to WPA2 only resolved the issue for me (the router has a rather strange option that allows encryption via WPA and WPA2 in parallel, and this option was enabled until now, it seems this caused confusion somewhere in ath9k or a related module).

I think this information could help to isolate the bug (if hickups upon WPA and WPA2 in parallel are considered a bug).

Revision history for this message
Philipp Raich (p-raich) wrote :

I have to correct myself: Actions taken above did improve, but NOT resolve the issue. Freezes still occur every now and then. Performance is rather bad as well, but could be because of the weak signal anyway.

The AVM-Router will soon be replaced by my own one that runs dd-wrt as soon as I get it back, and i really hope this will improve the situation, as I heard of people having freezes with a Fritz!Box/ath9k combination, although the module should never crash, no matter how borked incoming traffic is, and further it should never hang the whole kernel.

Analyzing the traffic with wireshark didn't reveal anything suspicious to me. On WPA2-only it now only happens if the (incoming) throughput is "rather high" for some time (typically download/stream/etc. and not necessarily max throughput), and as it seems there is no correlation to the overall amount of data received.

I as well compiled the latest state of compat-wireless, or other kernel-versions up to 3.1-rc6, it did not change a thing, freezes could even occurr seconds after rebooting (WPA+WPA2 in parallel), and did NEVER occur when only using the ethernet-connection.

I tried to enable debug-messages in ath9k to pin down what happens before the systems hangs, but I was not successful enabling them while following the according instructions I found (the according flag was generously ignored, the original developer-pages for the module at kernel.org were down at the time).

If someone has an advice what else I could do to help pin down/fix this bug (as long as I have this AVM-Router at my place) please let me know.

problem persists with a different router running dd-wrt, (verified with compat-wireless-tarball '2011-10-10' and '2011-09-19')

cranking up the TX-Power of the router and thus improving the signal had a positive effect, i.e. freezes almost disappeared, so it seems as if it could be related to the weak signal, at least in my (obscure) case. Nevertheless, i will turn to the ath9k-devel mailing list to see if somebody can tell me, how/where to find the cause for this.

[Actually, I already thought of checking upstream so I built the upstream kernel from git (3.1-rc6) before, and I mentioned it above. And I additionally checked twice with the newest release of compat-wireless, the last time with the tarball from 2011-10-10 (from yesterday, checked today, mentioned a few hours ago), which should be even ahead of the kernel a few more days if not weeks... So I am very confident, that the bug was never fixed and isn't even known of upstream, hence I turned to the ath9k-devel mailing liste a few hours ago]

Once the network has frozen, pinging the router gives no respons
Network manager doesn't signal a problem with wifi (with Networkmanager in debug mode there is no trace of error or warning)
De-blocking can be done by just reconnecting to the same wifi router
