On a related note, I attempted to run Oneiric with an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in place that referenced the i915 driver. I was greeted by the "Try or Install" prompt with the backlight activated, but no wallpaper. When I attempted to "Try Ubuntu" X crashed.
The system remained up and running with an activated backlight, albeit without X. Virtual consoles 1-6 were still up and running and from this standpoint, the system functioned normally as a text-only system. This has not occurred before. This leads me to believe the problem may in fact be related to the Intel graphics driver. However, more testing is necessary.
