Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Could you please try the following to use the VESA video driver, which should enable your system's display, although with reduced capabilities.

1- When you power up the system, press and keep the left SHIFT key, so you get the GRUB boot menu. If you don't get the GRUB menu, please reboot and try again, the timing can be a bit tricky.
2- Select the first line (should say "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic" or something similar), don't press Enter, press the "e" key to edit the command line used to boot the system.
3- Scroll down to the line that begins with "linux" (one before the last one), and then to the end of that line (so your cursor is positioned after "vt.handoff=7"
4- Add the following two parameters with spaces between them: xforcevesa nomodeset
5- Press Ctrl-X to start the boot process

Hopefully the system will boot and you'll have a useful display.

Once you do, please make sure you have an Internet connection, if at all possible, and execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal (press Ctrl-alt-t to open a terminal):

apport-collect 806978

If the system still doesn't show anything, please report back here so we can see if there are more things to try.

If you can't get an internet connection on that system, please also let me know so I can tell you how to produce and upload an offline report.

Thanks for your report and your help tracking down this issue!

My Acer Aspire 5336 laptop has the same problem. It occurred in Ocelot but was cured by editing etc/default/GRUB. After upgrading to Quetzal it recurred and I don't know what to do to fix it. Booting Quetzal leads to a complete blackout. It is possible to boot up in recovery mode, but only in 768 x 1024 video and simple graphics. The approach in the post above gives the same result. Who can help?
