Bug Description

Installing Ubuntu 10.04.2 on HP Probook 6560b did not initially support any network interfaces.
The wired network (according to spec) was Intel 82579LM. A workaround was to download and install e1000e-1.3.17.tar.gz from Intel's driver pages. The manual installation however broke networkmanager a bit.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Start all bug reports by gathering information with Apport, it is automatic and usually help a lot to have the information needed to debug. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 804281
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs. (step 4. and on)

Please note that this apport information is already after a number of tweaking steps:

1. make install NIC driver
2. Update everything
3. make install NIC driver again
4. install proprietary Broadcom driver (Administration -> Hardware Drivers)
5. Upgrade kernel and enable TRIM support SSD
6. make install NIC driver and install Broadcom driver again

So the bug really should be directed on the kernel in the Ubuntu 10.04.2 installer (2.6.32-28 I think), with a fix maybe in the next maintenance update release.

Hi Euro,

Hrm, it seems none of the apport information was attached. I'd specifically be interested in seeing your dmesg output (before any updated drivers are added) as well as the output of 'sudo lspci -vnvn'. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay, I was on vacation.

Here is the output of 'dmesg' and 'lspci -vnvn'. The output has been gathered from

- the current system
- Ubuntu 10.04.2 64bit release (booted from cd)
- Ubuntu 10.04.2 32bit release (booted from cd)

Hi Euro,

Support for this NIC is available in Maverick 10.10 or newer releases, see the following thread:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2010-September/012629.html

An SRU for Lucid 10.04 isn't likely going to happen due to some of the items discussed in the following thread:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2010-September/012521.html

However, if you still want to run a Lucid environment but have a newer kernel which supports this NIC, I'd suggest trying one of the linux-lts-backport-<series> package, eg:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-backport-maverick
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-backport-natty

For now I'm marking this Fix Released for Maverick and newer kernels. Thanks.

Hi Leann,

I did try installing linux-lts-backport-maverick kernel but then my Broadcom wireless driver no longer works :(
