Bug Description

My machine has a SiS 191 gigabit ethernet adapter integrated in the motherboard. I use it to connect to a RADIUS-authenticated IPv4-only network (I have disabled IPv6). Certain traffic will reliably cause the network connection to drop unexpectedly. This includes SFTP transfers larger than ~1MB, Steam update traffic, and in general TCP traffic (UDP, on the other hand, seems to work fine, based on the high uptime of a video game server). When the network connection has dropped, pinging localhost succeeds but pinging any other host fails (including the network gateway, nearby hosts, etc). `sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart` will bring network back until traffic triggers it to drop again. After some troubleshooting I have been advised that this may simply be a kernel driver bug and should be reported here. /var/log/syslog and /var/log/debug both seem to show nothing related, I am not sure if there is anywhere else I should look.

Ubuntu 11.04 Server 32-bit, fully updated.

i experienced similar problem with the motherboard ASUS P5SD2-VM which has on-board SiS 190/191 on natty (11.04), the adapter works but has issue on certain connections. changing mtu value to 1492 fixes the problem.

ifconfig eth0 mtu 1492

to fix the problem in a windows 7 virtual machine inside natty used this:
interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=1492 store=persistent

Jesse B. Crawford, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately the motherboard I owned with a SiS 191 has been replaced, so I can't test with that adapter now. Maybe GA could try on his machine?
