The device is claimed by the rtl8192cu wifi driver, available with kernel 2.6.39+. This driver is currently considered EXPERIMENTAL, that's why it's not turned on in the mainline builds.

Should be fixed with the 3.0-rc7 mainline build and oneiric's 3.0.0-5.6 kernel. Can you confirm?

A FYI:

With Ubuntu Oneiric Alpha 2 with kernel 3.0.0-5-generic, the usb wifi dongle seems to be recognized. See snippets below.

FWIW: I can't configure anything via the network applet in the upper right corner (does not work either for the built-in wifi, so probably a GUI / applet bug), but 'sudo iwlist scan' shows the wifi-networks seen by the usb wifi device, so that's good.

I first tried today's daily build of Oneiric from a persistent USB-key, but it asks for a password when I try to access the network applet. An empty password does not work. If somebody can tell what I should do, I can test further with the daily build

Update:

I removed the wifi security from my network to make things easier, but I still can't to it using the USB dongle. I used "gnome-control-center network" and CLI commands ("sudo iwconfig wlan1 essid MyNetwork" etc), but with no result. A snippet from dmesg:

FWIW: wlan0 (note the "0") does connect to the same Wifi point.

I will try the Daily Build to see if that works better.

I'm now running Oneiric daily build (2011-08-03) fully updated, with kernel 3.0.0-7-generic. The network app in the upper right corner does see Wifi-network, but still I have no luck in getting connected to my open network. See dmesg snippet below.

My results so far:

On 11.10 Oneiric alpha / daily build & fully updated (2011-08-04), I can not get the dongle to work. See the problems above.

On 11.04 Natty, the wifi dongle does correctly work after a manual download/make/make install/reboot sequence (see below)

So the driver in the 3.0.0-7-generic is not working for me. Does it work for anybody else?

Details for 11.04 (NOT 11.10):
