Bug Description

My computer hangs if I try to suspend via the GNOME menu if I use this (currently running) kernel:

linux-image-2.6.38-9-generic:
  Installiert: 2.6.38-9.43
  Kandidat: 2.6.38-9.43
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 2.6.38-9.43 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty-proposed/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

However, suspend/resume works properly if I use the distro kernel:

linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic:
  Installiert: 2.6.38-8.42
  Kandidat: 2.6.38-8.42
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 2.6.38-8.42 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Note that I get a blank screen during the suspend failure and the kernel no longer reponds to the network, so I cannot diagnose anything. If there are low-level kernel debug facilities that can log the suspend process via LAN, I can attempt that, I have another Linux computer (although openSUSE 11.4/i386) in the LAN - in that case, please send directions (URL to reasonable Wiki pages suffice).

"Ubuntu-bug linux" attachments for the working kernel can be found, for reference, in (invalid) Bug #779033. This report, however, is a re-report with the broken kernel running so that the various .txt files can be diffed if necessary.

I also have this problem with the proposed kernel. However, the Oneric kernel (2.6.39-020639) works perfectly.

I recently upgraded from stock natty (2.6.38) to 2.6.39-0 which I got from https://launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive/ppa - this was in a bid to fix bad behaviour with Intellij ( http://youtrack.jetbrains.net/issue/IDEA-69222 ) - which it did, but unfortunately it also introduced the flashing-moon-of-death on suspend with my ThinkPad X220 (i7 processor). :-(

On my computer, 2.6.38-10-generic (regular update kernel) + uswsusp works now. Note I had purged uswsusp some time ago when testing; so possibly people need to reinstall uswsusp. Note also that uswsusp may be useless on computers with other mainboards.

So would you consider this bug fixed, or is suspending via the Gnome Menu still broken on 2.6.38-10.46?

The report is valid as it stands (i. e. -9 is b0rked and regresses on
suspend on my hardware), I merely described a workaround (-10 + uswsusp)
that's viable for me---but not necessarily for others.

So no, this is NOT an excuse to close the bug, in case you considered that.

Matthias Andree, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend ? As well, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

Due to lack of pinpointed reactions to various issues, the computer in question has been upgraded to 12.04 LTS in the meanwhile. I can no longer test natty stuff.
