I have the same problem. How can I help you to fix the bug? I'm bored to replug my mouse!

O.S: Ubuntu 11.04 (x86) - Gnome
Mouse model: Logitech RX250 (USB)

I tried 3 different USB slot and I always experienced the same problem.

Ditto. I´ve had this problem since 10.04, but could never pinpoint it for a bug report.

Come on! It's a really boring bug. 2 months confirmed, unassigned and undecided... It's unbelievable! Do you know that some PC have not easily accessible ports? I can't replug the mouse everytime i reboot the PC. I'm working, I'm not doing a pic nic in the park!

I found a solution: I used an usb hub for the mouse. I think it is something about the power supply: the hub would introduce a discontinuity in the signal and this acts like a replug.

I bet the software driver has a bad initialized variable somewhere. It is set correctly only after the first replug! Mine is only a feeling: I'm a programmer but I have never taken a look to the linux usb driver code.

I don't use a hub and have tried with the mouse on both front-side and
back-side ports.
I have noticed that after the first unplug-replug, that I can reboot the
machine and it does not need additional unplugging/replugging, just on first
power-up.

Confirming the work around reported in #6.

I have an old USB-1 hub by Linksys and plugged the mouse through it. It works every time.

My power supply died, so I put my hard drives into another box. This was the only change to my system (OS and peripherals all untouched), and I am experiencing this bug only since. Quite perplexing, as well as galling, to suddenly have to crawl under my desk every time I want to start my computer. A genuine fix would be much appreciated, but in the meantime I will try to find a hub.

I've seen this same bug reported in many forums but have NOT been able to find a solution anywhere other than replugging the USB pointer. Sometimes other USB pointer issues get mixed in but the common point for this particular issue is the pointer is never detected at startup but works fine after unplugging and replugging the pointer.

OOps my last comment was a bit premature. I found another solution other than replugging the USB mouse. At boot enter your BIOS setup and look for an Integrated Peripherals section. It's counter intuitive, but worked for me. I disabled the USB mouse support entry. I have no idea why this worked but if you have the same problem give it a try, if it doesn't work you can always reset it by entering the BIOS again and changing it back to enabled.

WolphFang,
there's a patch for some Nvidia USB controllers (including yours) in natty's latest kernel (2.6.38-11.48). Could you update and confirm whether this is still an issue?

So far so good. Mouse is working on every power off/power on cycle.

Yes. 99.9% of the time. Everyone once in a blue moon it would work, but all
seems to fine now.
