Bug Description

I'm unable to load the Ubuntu 11.04 Live CD (both 32 and 64 bit). The live CD for Ubuntu 10.10 works perfectly. When I boot off the 11.04 CD I get the purple screen that says Ubuntu and then I get a screen that says:
"Unable to find a medium containing a live file system".

It does not even get to the part where I can select to install or try it out. I checked the MD5 for the ISO and I also did an MD5 check on every file on the CD and it seems to be fine. I'm not looking to create a USB stick image, I simply want a 11.04 live CD just like the one from 10.10.

Motherboard: Asus P5B Deluxe
DVD: Pioneer DVR-216D SATA
Graphics: Nvidia Geforce GTX 280

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0

My DVD-RW drive (DVD-RW, SATA, Pioneer, AHCI mode) is not recognized with first three boot messages "failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4)" after an new installation of openSUSE 11.4. The problem did not appear for openSUSE 11.3. Workarounds from forums (Ubuntu) did not solve the problem, neither adding the "irqpoll" kernel boot parameter nor a hardware power off. For the second workaround only a first boot results in a recognized DVD drive. After rebooting the same problem appears as described above. The problem may be solved here "https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=107847", but i did not check this for my system.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. (Re)boot system without hardware power off(e.g. un/replugging the power cable)

Actual Results:
DVD drive is not recognized, i.e. is not present in /dev, a CD/DVD cannot be read or written.

Expected Results:
DVD drive should be recognized.

The DVD-RW drive is a Pioneer DVR 216D SATA model. The "desktop" kernel is used.

Well, we can try it. Can you provide the output of 'hwinfo' ?

I'm experiencing the same thing (same DVD-RW drive). But this problem occurs only if there is a disk (dvd-rw) in the drive. If the drive is empty system boots just fine.

My drive doesn't work. Neither with a disk inside nor empty. Here comes my hwinfo output as bugzilla attachment.

Ok, that patch was merged in 2.6.38, but is for the 212D and you have a 216D.

Great, thanks. I've committed it to the openSUSE-11.4 and master branches. It should be a part of the next update.

I'm having the same problem on a fresh 11.4 install that's been updated. I have the Pioneer DVR-216 as opposed to the DVR-216D though. I've attached a portion of my dmesg output that shows the error.

My apologies, I accidentally attached my entire dmesg output, here's the portion I intended to attach.

libata: Pioneer DVR-216D can't do SETXFER

Commit 4a5610a04d415ed94af75bb1159d2621d62c8328 fixed an issue with
the Pioneer DVR-212D not handling SETXFER correctly. An openSUSE user
reported a similar issue with his DVR-216D that the NOSETXFER horkage
worked around for him as well.

This patch adds the DVR-216D (1.08) to the horkage list for NOSETXFER.

I tried the alternate iso and it works. The graphical install menu comes up. I didn't try to install it since I want to try out the live CD first. So why is it that the regular live CD gives an error when booting?

Sorry, I have to reopen this bug. There are more Pioneer device out there,
which do not like this set xfermode. Mine is a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-216D, 1.09.
See the dmesg snippet in comment #12.
Please not the different firmware version: 1.09 instead of 1.08. See comment
#11 for yet another variant (DVR-216 vs. DVR-216D) of this drive.

With the coming release of openSUSE 12.2, openSUSE kernel developers are focusing their efforts there. Reports against openSUSE 11.4 and prior will not get the attention needed to resolve them before openSUSE 12.2 is release and openSUSE 11.4 becomes unmaintained.

Please re-test with openSUSE 12.1 or openSUSE RC2+ and re-open with an updated Product if you still encounter your issue.

We apologize for this issue not getting the attention it deserves but we are focusing our resources in the area where they will have the most impact for our users. We're working hard to make openSUSE 12.2 the best openSUSE release yet!
