was working - then unity stopped working
forced the laptop to turn off (acer aspire 7551)
rebooted - got locked in automatic login - managed to get to terminal 01 (ctrl-alt-f1)
logged in as root , did a who -u , killed the process and logged in as classic
got many kernel problems popping up - managed to send this through
I'm not using fglrx

Using Additional drivers - fglrx fixes the issue, but I dont like this driver as it is 'jerky' whereas the ubuntu driver was not
So I guess this is a ati mobility radeon hd4250 driver issue

I removed the fglrx driver again today.
I was able to log in with Unity successfully without any errors so far.
