I believe this problem also affect Packard Bell EasyNote LV. It need i915.invert_brightness=1 to avoid the black screen of death when installing Ubuntu and when booting the installed system. With the setting in place, one can log into Gnome, but when one log into KDE, the screen is turned off again.
