This should give you a the patched kernel and gnome-power-manager. Shut down and boot.
For my system this kernel gives me full hotkey backlight control (with the caveat that I have to up the brightness again after every time I close the lid - with the now working hotkeys).
A patched kernel and gnome-power-manager exist to get the backlight hotkeys working:

add it to your sources e.g. with:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kamalmostaf
then reload the package information and upgrade your system (e.g. with synaptic)
