Bug Description

Resuming this system from suspend only shows a blank screen, rather then returning to the desktop.

Assigning to the kernel team to look at - the CurrentDmesg attachment seems to have a lot of good debug information in it.

Marc, it looks like the CurrentDmesg.txt shows a suspend/resume cycle. I take it then that the system is still responsive after resume, it's just that the display isn't working? If so, can you capture dmesg again after resume when booted with the kernel parameter drm.debug=0xe?

Changed in linux (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Incomplete

Seth, booted the system with the added kernel parameter, suspended the system, and then rebooted (with kernel param) to desktop.

Seth Forshee (sforshee) wrote :

I don't see a suspend in the dmesg you attached. So the machine was really rebooted after suspend, not resumed?

Hrm, I looked at CurrentDmesg.txt again and what's actually in there is a failed suspend, not a successful suspend/resume. So is the system locked hard when you try to resume it, or is it still responsive (i.e. you can still log into the system over ssh)? If you can get in via ssh, please use this to capture dmesg after resume, before rebooting.

If it's completely unresponsive after resume, try the pm_trace steps from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend. If that doesn't work there's something new we can try, it just takes a little bit of effort to get set up.

Reinstalled 11.04 and now I'm not seeing this issue. Instead it simply doesn't suspend, just seems to logout the user.

Marc, can you try to install all the updates, try to suspend, and attach the dmesg, please?

Ara, reinstalled 11.04 and now suspend will actually suspend and not log off the user with -updates. Trying to use '"sudo sh -c "sync; echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace; pm-suspend"' to retrieve more debugging info does not result in the machine actually suspending.

Seth Forshee (sforshee) wrote :

Marc, do you still see this message after a failed suspend?

  legacy_suspend(): pnp_bus_suspend+0x0/0x90 returns 28

If so we can probably add a little more debugging to help narrow down which device is failing to suspend.

Seth, I do not see that message on the screen or in any of the logs.

Zack Evans (zevans23) wrote :

I have had this issue since karmic; still here in oneiric. I think there's some sort of race condition, because SOMETIMES it will come back and allow me to unlock the X session and THEN lock; other times it comes back to a blank screen.

Attached my kern.log from just after filesystems were mounted this morning until the point I power cycled now.

Jonathan Allard (joallard) wrote :

This bug affects me too on a Lenovo ThinkPad W520. Sometimes the unlock screen comes back, sometimes it doesn't. I just had to reboot. What would be a temporary fix to bring it back?

The latest Quantal kernel can be downloaded from(Arch specific links are under "Builds"):

Please install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Thanks in advance

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.
