+ [gm45] GPU lockup (EIR: 0x00000010) during boot - EIR stuck: 0x00000010,
+ masking

The GPU appears to be locking up during boot but the kernel is able to successfully reset it and carry on. However, the crash still throws an event, which apport catches and does a bug report on.

This looks a LOT like bug #702090 where the vesafb kernel driver was loaded initially and causes the hang, but then gets ejected when the kernel switches to DRM.

Can someone who is able to reproduce this issue reliably (look in your dmesg output after booting) please try disabling vesafb and see if that works around it?

Is it still not recommended for an amateur to upgrade?

@rtstxtrdnr, with Alpha-2 out it should be safe to upgrade. You might try booting the livecd first before doing an upgrade just to be safe if you're worried.

@Dennis, thanks.

Anyone else able to reproduce it?

I have done this on a separate partition but now am trying to work with
missing buttons on the dashand cannot add them.The most important are
places, application, and system. Also the firebox button disappeared! Any
help would be great. I am currently using 10.10 to work on.

You are starting the default desktop? That is the netbook menu and it's
hiding in the upper left corner. The left side of the window is also the
place where the menu appears when you move the mouse in that direction. At
my laptop the response is very slow and unworkable due to a intel driver
issue (I think) so I am limited in my suggestions for you.
Have you created a separate user for this 11.04 environment, with a separate
home directory like /home/separate/. I would recommend that, the settings
might interfere with the settings from other ubuntu versions.

Would someone who can reproduce this bug please try booting with vesafb disabled? You can do this by adding this to the kernel command line:

   vesafb.anything=1

If that makes the freezes go away, then I think this bug is definitely a dupe of bug #702090 (but the logs on this one are newer).
