Did this freeze occur just the one time or have you had other similar freezes (with or without the apport bug reporting tool popping up)?

this crash happens quite often (shortly after i login) with and without apport popping up. sometimes the mouse clicks aren't recognized for a couple of minutes and then all of a sudden it works again but i can't tell what brings the mouse click recognition back.

Bryce Harrington (bryce) wrote :

Thanks. The "all of a sudden it works" might be the kernel managing to unlock the gpu, but if so it's curious it only happens after a couple minutes.

Haven't had this behaviour since 2 days. Before it happended everytime i logged in. Maybe it's gone.

Andree, hmm... well sometimes these types of bugs just take a short holiday. Let's give it a few more days to see if it comes back. If not, we can close out the bug for tracking purposes, and you can reopen if it does come back.

ok, then please close the bug. I will reopen it if it occurs again.

haha, Murphy's law!!! Now it happend again.

Bryce Harrington (bryce) wrote :

Hi Andree, can you tell me more about this second time it happened? Did apport pop up to report the bug? (If it does in the future, please do file it again; sometimes the extra logs for comparison can help isolate the issue). What were you doing leading up to the lockup?

We're going to be moving natty to its new X stack within the next week
or so. Currently this stack is available in xorg-edgers, and our
testing is showing it to be quite stable.

I'd like to have you attempt to reproduce your issue with this new
stack. If it still occurs with that stack, we can then take the the bug
upstream, or approach the kernel team or other appropriate groups about
it.

The PPA is available at:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

Here's a simple way to install:
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade

Then reboot your system to get to the new bits.

If you want to go back to stock Ubuntu, there is a corresponding
ppa-purge tool:
  sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade

hey,
 w
i have installed the new X stack but after a reboot it crashed again but without freeze. The freeze was also gone with the old packages. I can't exactly tell you whether it is the same problem or not since apport crashed too before it showed the description. But i found a crash report in /var/crash/ which i add as attachment.

hopefully that helps.

andree

would it be helpful to upload my syslog file?

Bryce Harrington (bryce) wrote :

It can't hurt.

Word from Intel is they don't want to look at the bug until it's been confirmed against their Q4 release. So we may have to just backburner this bug for a while until we get a chance to package the Q4 bits (unless you'd like to try building and running them manually).

Bryce Harrington (bryce) wrote :

Actually, I see that xorg-edgers has even newer than Q4 bits, along with our new X stack.

Can you please reproduce your issue with this new stack? The PPA is available at:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

Here's a simple way to install:
  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
  sudo apt-get update

I did the update but the crash still occurs. i now figured out that it happens either while booting or while the login happens. last time it happened the clock on the top panel showed 9:26 pm when it appeared after login but the crash file was from 9:25 pm.

is it maybe related to this bug? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/706401

Thanks, I think that narrows this to a bug in the upstream code. Next step is to forward this bug upstream.

Are you still finding the system locks up with this GPU bug? Like I mentioned earlier, I'd like to send this upstream now that natty is upgraded to latest kernel and xserver versions. Can you please run apport-collect 700282 at this time, to collect logs that are the right version?

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
