Bug Description

Hi,

after updating to 10.10, I have a serious problem with my mouse.
It often happens, that the left-click gets deactivated. While I still can move the cursor around and make right licks, lefft clicks are simply ignored by the system.

Only after logging out and in again the problem is gone.
This occures with both the touchpad (I got a Dell Inspiron 6400) and the external mouse.

It usually happens when I'm watching flash-videos or starting some kind of multimedia application like Guayadeque, VLC, Banshee, Totem etc.

There are several other users that report having the same issue, I could not find any suiting bug, thoug.

Any ideas what could be causing the trouble or any further information needed?

Thanks

I'm trying the following PPA as it was mentioned as a possible solution:

Got this bug, it's quite rare but is major when it happens (end up rebooting). Left mouse click is unresponsive but everything else works fine, can use keyboard to switch/use programs etc. did not check the mouse wheel.

Hi splashis,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I have had this happend a few times every year for more than 2 years. With 3 different computers (all laptops, mostly been using this kind of computers just...). And with older Ubuntu versions.

Got the error yesterday again, and remember having it a few days back for about 2 times. Just after I got Ubuntu 10.10 installed. I'm quite sure I have tried Alt+tab, but that does nothing.. but how could that be. Considering that files on the Desktop get selected when search/selecting files by pressing keys.

So I tried to get the left mouse click working again. [Ctrl+Alt+F1], And I could not find anything else to test then to: [rmmod psmouse]. And it solved it this time (first time tried), left mouse click working ok again. (after [c...+a...+f7]). But the really strange thing is that the keyboard stopped working for a few seconds after switching back to virtual terminal 1 (F1). I feel quite sure about this keyboard error. It's a PS/2 keyboard I think. The mouse used is a USB mouse, also tested with another USB mouse with this last time (so far). So no faulty mouse. But I don't remember testing if the touchpad ~mouse buttons~ where working. Maybe I have not tested them... while affected by this bug.

Could this somehow be related to the i8042. I'm quite sure my laptop (Lenovo Z560) needs to be blacklisted for this i8042.nomux. Erratic mouse cursor movement with touchpad sometimes. When getting this bug I have not been used this option. But are now. I don't know for these laptops. They could have been blacklisted in kernel or not.

Maybe for Lenovo (Y500 etc). Seems to be totally unusable without this kernel option.

I guess the trackpad on the Z560 is ok, even without the nomux option.

But the point is that this could be related to for example this nomux parameter not being used when it should be. Or some other parameter for the i8042.

I have had some key repetition errors on a Compal FL91 laptop. And that one also beeing the one having the errors with left mouse button beeing unusable.

The keyboard repetition problem have happend at least 3 times, in a short period of time (maybe less than 15 minutes)
The result was 10, 11 and 12 equal chars (counting the first one also).
This was on Ubuntu 10.04

Could be unrelated issues. The FL91 laptop is the one I have been using mostly.

Some more testing done.

It seems like the left mouse button gets stuck in pressed down mode, at least for the applications. But maybe except for the application/widget where the last mouse activity happened before the bug occured.

I have installed "gpm - General Purpose Mouse interface" to test the mouse and trackpad in a Linux virtual terminal.
And while the bug is active in X/Gnome, there are no problems in the Linux virtual terminal. Both mouse and trackpad works fully.

And when switching back to X/Gnome, the bug is still active for the USB mouse. But touchpad activity in X/Gnome breaks the 'left mouse lock' somehow for me.

I have only been using the external mouse when this have happend.

Not sure if this is the same bug, but I think it's in Gnome. Could be related to X also, but are there reports about this kind of bugs for KDE? Or then the error is in X, but KDE is more tolerant.

To reproduce the bug. (Type some text first??) Then left clicking with maybe some drag/select could do it. Have happend for me in gedit, gnome terminal, firefox... With the last think before the bug occured being just moving the mouse cursor and left clicking or pushing the button down once. But it needs some luck/timing/'specific state' it seems...

One I have also been able to get a text selection moving in Chromium after playing around a bit after this bug occured. That is with the hand 'mouse cursor' holding the selection, without holding down the left mouse button. (Probably involving Ctrl+A since the selection where large). And it can have been in/from the same tab that the bug occured in.
