Bug Description

Wireless seems to like to disassociate/reassociate a lot. Connection stays up perhaps 2 minutes before disassociating.

Running stock UNE 10.10 installation, kernel 2.6.35-22-generic-pae

Same problem exists when linux-backports-modules-wireless are installed.

Wireless is not usable.

Hardware is an Acer Aspire 1 n450

I have the same problem on my netbook, after upgrading my 10.04 UNE installation to 10.10.
Used kernel: 2.6.35: 2.6.35-22-generic
Hardware: Lenovo ideapad S10-3

The System was running fine using 10.04 UNE.

The Linux Journal article describing this bug in some detail is out:

As an update, I installed the 10.10 Desktop image on the Acer netbook to rule out a bad Unity interaction with the network manager, and the same behavior exists: the Atheros wireless cannot stay connected.

Generally the Wifi connection lasts for 2 or 3mn before hanging. The 3G+ modem seems affected too.

I wonder how can it be atl1c-related problem? atl1c is Atheros 1000M Ethernet Network Driver, and we are talking about wireless problem, right?

Brief research lead me to ath9k module's nohwcrypt param (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1597780).
I tried sudo rmmod -f ath9k; sudo modprobe ath9k nohwcrypt=1 but this bug still affects me.

@ dir01: *Almost* This certainly has made things better, but not rock solid. I'd get disconnected every 3-4 hours or so. Now, it seems to go for a good 18 hour before disconnecting. But this kernel seems blazing fast!

Having the same issue on Asus k50i Athx9 driver. My connection last for about 45mins and then dies. I have tried upgrading kernel to the latest stable. But no love, I have installed the mainline, but I got nothing. I will try again. I have homework I need to get finished - this isn't how I planned to spend my night.

Hi DougR,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 660864

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

i tired everything : wicd, new kernel 36& 37, backports and nothing worked for me

the solution is to change os. maybe ubuntu must change the policy of releasing new release every 6 month and concentrate on bug solving and releasing a solid system
good luck every one :)

I have a Asus N61J laptop, and am using the AR9285 driver. The laptop has dual-boot, and in Windows the wireless is stable, no downtime experienced so far. In Ubuntu, it will stay connected anywhere from a couple of minutes - up to a couple of hours - and then it just stops working. There's no sign in network manager that it has stopped working, I just notice that all network activity fails. Then I disconnect and reconnect, and it works again (for a while).

Please let me know if there's any more information I can contribute to get this fixed. It's annoying enough to make me want to boot into Windows - for network stability.

I've been having the same problem ever since I bought my Asus U35JC in December last year. First with 10.10 and now on 11.04 as well. I have a D-link DIR-655 802.11n router and the only solution for me has been to set the router to only use 802.11g. It's dissapointing though to not be able to utilize the routers 11n capability.

I have an Asus N61J and I am running Ubuntu 11.04 (64 bits), wireless is Atheros AR9285 and my kernel version is 2.6.38-10-generic x86_64. I have been having the problem that my Wireless would stop working when streaming or downloading a big file. No error message would show up.

I found a workaround by following the instructions on: http://blog.homelinux.org/?p=327

I have a lenovo laptop with an Atheros AR9285.

Wireless was connecting to my access point, but no traffic was flowing (I could not even ping the access point). This was on Natty.

I upgraded to Oneiric Ocelot and the problem is still there.

Turning off security on the access point gave me a working card.

Google came up with this:

http://blog.homelinux.org/?p=327

Following the instructions there:

  sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf

and adding the following to ath9k.conf:

options ath9k nohwcrypt=1

Rebooting then solves the problem.

It seems the hwcrypt option for the card is broken. Hopefully this modprobe fix can be included in the Ocelot release.
